Varenicline overview

Teva Varenicline is a safe and effective treatment for smoking cessation in adults. It is a first-line stop smoking aid that does not contain nicotine. Varenicline works on receptors in the brain to reduce the rewarding effects of smoking, alleviate withdrawal symptoms, and fight cravings. 

The treatment course is 12 weeks with the quit date is usually between day 8 and 14. Weekly behavioural support for at least four weeks and the quit date, then fortnightly. Patients who cannot tolerate the adverse effects of varenicline can have the dose lowered temporarily or permanently to 0.5mg twice daily. 

Varenicline is not licensed for people who smoke and are under 18 years of age, neither is it licensed for pregnant women.
