"I started smoking at 12 years old, 40 years on and it felt like I’d got away with it until pneumonia struck me 3 years ago. Most people living around me have COPD or a smokers’ cough and after confirmation I did not have COPD, I continued to smoke until June 2025.  After feeling poorly during the night, I needed the hospital at 6am Sunday morning. I was put in a coma on the high dependency ward and hooked up to a ventilator to give my body the best chance of healing.

The hospital provided patches during my stay; however, I tried smoking after returning home. After three days of this, my chest became wheezy, and breathing became a struggle. With the support of my partner and Yorkshire Smokefree Wakefield, my quit attempt began. I have now completed 12 weeks and intend to stay quit".

Congratulations on you 12 week quit, Jackie. The stop smoking team in Wakefield remain here for you - keep up the hard work.
