At 56, George decided it was time to quit smoking after years of the habit. On 13th September 2024, he began his smoke-free journey with Yorkshire Smokefree Wakefield at Airedale Library, motivated by his sister-in-law’s diagnosis with COPD. Together, they made a commitment to change their lives.

George initially chose nicotine replacement therapy and had regular meetings with his advisors, Clare and Carol. While he faced challenges—such as issues with his nicotine patches sticking—he adapted by switching to a vape, which worked better for him.

Surprisingly, quitting wasn’t as difficult as George had anticipated, even though he had smoked since the age of 12. Reflecting on his experience, George said:

💬 “The service demonstrates understanding and patience without judgement.”

The benefits of quitting have been life-changing for George. The leg cramps and indigestion he experienced while smoking have disappeared, and he can now keep up with his grandchildren without losing his breath.

George’s journey is proof that it’s never too late to make a positive change. He is determined to stay smoke-free and continue enjoying the healthier, happier life he’s built.
