bowel cancer awareness month

Every 15 minutes someone is diagnosed with bowel cancer and it’s the UK’s second biggest cancer killer but it shouldn’t be. It’s treatable and curable especially if diagnosed early. Nearly everyone survives bowel cancer if diagnosed at the earliest stage however this drops significantly as the disease develops. Yorkshire Smokefree is proud to support Bowel Cancer Awareness Month 2020.

What is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month?

Bowel Cancer Awareness month takes place every April, raising awareness, engaging with communities and encouraging donations for ongoing research to stop people dying of the disease. It is run by Bowel Cancer UK for all ages and social groups, with special focus on those whose lives have been affected by the loss of a loved one, had personal experience, are a young person with bowel cancer or a volunteer for the cause. They also welcome healthcare professionals endorsements via social media, websites, blogs, newsletters, bulletins, intranets, local news and professional networks.

This month they are empowering supporters to Brew Together with virtual tea events through Whatsapp or email, to enjoy a cuppa and cake while donating at their official site. By signing up, you will receive a free digital fundraising package. There will be a nationwide Star of Hope candle lighting livestream on Sunday 5th April at 3pm in memory of those lost to Bowel Cancer, with a minimum donation of £5. If you cannot spare the time to take part, you can always visit the charitable shop where 100% of profits go directly to Bowel Cancer UK, as well as signing up for the newsletter and become a valued part of #TeamBowelCancer

Finding a cure for Bowel Cancer is vitally important, as is prevention. In the UK roughly 7% of cases are linked to the frequent use of cigarette and tobacco products. The risk of illness increases depending on the number of cigarettes smoked per day, with female smokers 19% more likely to become ill when compared to their male counterparts. Smokers are known to develop non-cancerous polyp growths in the bowl which can become cancerous if gone undetected.
